Introduction

Side events are an excellent opportunity for stakeholders to dive deeper into pressing water issues within smaller, stakeholder-driven sessions. Share your expertise and insights, building collaborative connections with fellow Conference participants.

While aligning with the overarching themes of the 5 interactive dialogues of the UN  2023 Water Conference, side events offer you the freedom to choose specific topics that meet your interest.

The conference organizers provide dedicated space for your event, assist with visa applications for your participants, and arrange convenient local transportation. Additionally, you can enjoy a networking opportunity at the evening reception.

A diverse range of stakeholders can bring their unique perspectives to the table! International and regional organizations, financial institutions, government agencies, civil society groups, academic institutions, and the private sector are all welcome to organize side events.

Building Momentum – From COP 28 to COP 29: Advancing Water

The purpose of this side event is to build on the momentum gained at COP 28 and contribute to multiplying these positive outcomes at COP 29. This will be achieved by:- Strengthening and developing cooperation and partnerships at all levels, – Discussing solutions and building partnerships to close the gap in water financing and climate adaptation – Analyzing existing measures and campaigns, including those developed at the UN2023 Water Conference – e.g. the Water Action Agenda – and COP 28.- Presenting new ideas and and- Developing recommendations to further advance water sustainability and climate action. – Facilitating an exchange of views with the incoming COP29 Presidency of Azerbaijan and more.

The  side event aims to amplify the voices of stakeholders from mountainous regions, advocating for collective action to address human mobility-related challenges and opportunities within the context of climate change. By bridging evidence gaps, fostering collaboration, and building capacities, this event seeks to galvanize support ahead of key milestones such as the International Year of Glacier Preservation, the Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions, and the 29th Conference of Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Also, the Side-event serves as a platform to showcase Tajikistan’s National Strategy for Adaptation to Climate Change, highlight the unique challenges faced by mountainous regions, and mobilize collective action towards sustainable adaptation and resilience-building efforts.

Central Asia relies heavily on shared water resources for its socio-economic development, making effective management critical for the region’s sustainable future. However, managing these transboundary rivers presents a myriad of challenges, including increasing demand by sectors, limited institutional capacity, and joint management at the hydrographic boundary. Effective transboundary water cooperation is essential for ensuring equitable access to water resources, reducing the risk of disputes and conflicts among riparian states, and promoting sustainable development. By working together to manage shared water resources, Central Asian countries can optimize the use of water for agriculture, energy production, and other sectors, while also protecting the environment and ecosystem health.

The side event entitled Mission River aims to gather philanthropists, business executives, youth leaders, government officials, and youth leaders to talk about the importance of restoring and reviving rivers especially in the Global South. The session also aims to catalyze partnerships and collaboration by establishing a network of individuals, organizations, and businesses who are willing to make bold commitments towards river restoration.

The main purpose of the Side event is to discuss the issues of enhancing the efforts of states and other stakeholders on water use issues for the mid-term comprehensive review of progress in achieving the goals of the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development” 2018-2028.

The issues of water-food nexus, climate and glaciers, determining the value of groundwater resources are proposed for discussion” in order to demonstrate Russian approaches to water problems in a favorable light and to intensify cooperation with Central Asian countries.

This event will present the organizational progress of the summit, as well as the deliverables that will be presented at the One Water Summit. In this way, the 3rd High-Level International Conference on the International Decade for Action “Water for Sustainable Development”, 2018-2028, appears to be an essential milestone on the international water agenda in which the One Water Summit wishes to participate to fully contribute to the ongoing United Nations discussions.

Finance and Investment for Water, Energy and Land-use Nexus in Central Asia

This side event will discuss the economics and financial aspects of cross-sectoral and transboundary co-operation on water, energy, and land use management in Central Asia. Aligned with the Conference’s objectives, the session will facilitate the exchange of good practices, such as the importance of securing a “whole of government” approach to the sustainable management of water and effective financial solutions in support of cross-sectoral cooperation across different sectors between the energy, water, and land-use sectors. To do so, this session will collect views from the Central Asian countries on these issues and facilitate the alignment with other water-energy-food nexus related initiatives that exist in the region.

Asia Pacific Regional Workshop will incorporate both the Asia region workshop of the fourth phase and an open panel discussion. The workshop will contribute to extending the use of the SDG-PSS while addressing challenges in accelerating the achievement of SDG 6. In addition, the outcome of the regional workshop will be showcased, through an open panel discussion on 12th June afternoon.
