The side event will serve as a platform for the exchange of knowledge and experience between experts, representatives of government agencies, local communities and other stakeholders, which contributes to a better understanding of the problems associated with glacial lakes and effective planning to reduce the risks of socio–economic development of Central Asian countries.
In addition, the side event will provide opportunities to demonstrate the National experience of the countries of the region in monitoring and assessing the risk associated with the breakthrough of glacial lakes, highlighting the unique problems faced by vulnerable communities in mountainous areas. As well as strengthening adaptation to climate change by reducing the risk and vulnerability associated with the Glacial Lake outburst floods (GLOFs).

The purpose of this Side event is to demonstrate the best policy and practice of Tajikistan in the field of IWRM, ensuring the achievement of the goals and objectives of the International Water Decade, including SDG 6 at the national level. The session will also present the National Water Strategy of Tajikistan for the period up to 2040, which is the outcome of Tajikistan’s commitment at the UN Water Conference 2023 in New York. During the session it is also planned to adopt voluntary commitments of development partners in the implementation of the National Water Strategy of Tajikistan to ensure sustainable development of the water sector of Tajikistan.

The objective of the Side event is to discuss with the Ministers potential areas of regional and national investments. The meeting is called as a follow up to the joint statement made by the CA countries at the UN2023 Water Conference development of which was facilitated during the Central Asia Forum held in June 2022 as part of the 2nd high-level Dushanbe Conference. The invitation for the meeting is extended by the World Bank jointly with the EC IFAS to advocate for the importance of a systematic and cooperative approach to regional water management in Central Asia.
